Meet Yubeda Miah, a principal by day and Indian Dancer by night!
Yube jumped into Bollywood classes with Nara in 2012 and discovered her roots, a new source of confidence, and an un-tapped passion for Indian Dance!
Here’s her story.
What brought you to Bollywood dance? I grew up listening to Indian music. My dad is from India and he would play Ravi Shankar, classical Indian music, and what was probably ‘Bollywood’ music around the house. So, I feel at home when I hear the music and when I first saw Bollywood dance I thought it was beautiful, though it looked incredibly difficult!
What challenges did you face before trying a Bollywood class? Honestly, I never thought about dancing Bollywood. Three years ago I tried this type of dance for the first time with a different instructor and I was in over my head! With Nara it has been pure fun! I love the way she breaks down each move, step-by-step, and uses cues to help us remember them!
What has been the most rewarding or fulfilling experience you have had so far? Seeing how far I have come. Nara’s patience, positive comments and genuine passion for dance makes her classes fun even when things are challenging! You leave feeling like you learned something you’d normally say, “there’s no way I can do that!” With regular classes, practice on my own, and the help of other dancers, I have learned routines that I would never in a million years think I could accomplish. Another rewarding experience has been the friendships I’ve made with the girls in class! When we perform we help each other with pining our costumes, fixing our hair and makeup… all the girl-stuff you do when you’re a little girl we get to do as grown-ups!
What do you enjoy most about Nara’s Bollywood classes? I enjoy the variety of dance we learn in every class. I never know what new movement or style of dance we’re going to learn but I love them all! In addition to Bollywood we have also learned Bhangra which is a style of dance I knew little about.
Would you recommend Belly Motions Bollywood classes to other people? Absolutely! You don’t realize it during class but it’s a serious workout! I leave the studio sweaty, happy, and energetic even though I walked in dragging myself there.
I’ve also become more confident with Bollywood dancing and this confidence carries over into my life. Learning Bollywood dance is empowering!
Where do you hope to take your “Bollywood dancing career?” Although dancing is my hobby, I feel great passion for this type of dance. I hope to continue dancing for fun, becoming a better student, and participating in events as much as possible! I guess I never thought of Bollywood dancing as a “career” but it is like my second career. If I had started dancing earlier in my life, I would have made it my first – that’s how much I love it!
Thank you for sharing your story with us, Miss Yube!
We love seeing you dancing, smiling, and having the time of your life!
